Rule of Thumb

Просто чтобы не забыть:

"Metaphor (the transference of a name by perceived analogy), metonymy (the substitution of the name of an attribute for the name of a thing), and synecdoche (pars pro toto or vice versa) are among the most powerful motors of semantic change. An etymologist is constantly on the lookout for them, trying to peel off later layers of meaning from a recorded form."

Anatoly Liberman. Word Origins and How We Know Them. Etymology for Everyone. Oxford University Press, New York, 2009.

Вообще замечательная книга, масса всего полезного.
